The 2016 presidential race is anything but ordinary. Nobody has any idea what’s going to happen next, and that’s a terrifying notion considering the future of our country is at stake on nytimes.com. Maybe that’s why George Soros has made a large financial donation to the democratic candidate for the first time since 2004.
George Soros is a philanthropic billionaire. In his lifetime he’s donated over 13 billion dollars to numerous charities because, in short, it makes him happy. Aside from supporting charitable foundations on almost every continent, Mr. Soros is a proud champion of multiple political causes.
So far, George Soros has committed more than $25 million to Hillary Clinton’s campaign. He’s said to have known the Clintons for over 25 years, but it appears his donation is more than a generous gesture between old friends. When Mr. George Soros donated an unprecedented $27 billion to the liberal party in 2004, it was because of who the republican candidate was. In an interview with the Washington Post, Mr. Soros said that he would sacrifice his entire fortune if someone could guarantee that Bush would lose the election. Soros compared the Bush administration to Hitler’s Nazi Regime and considered the election a matter of life and death.
In 2005 Soros helped launch the Democracy Alliance. Instead of focusing on elections, the Democracy Alliance provides funding for long-term political battles, such as income equality and climate change.
So, why did George Soros decide to donate such a large sum of money to the democratic nominee after dialing back on his political giving for more than a decade? Could it be in part because the Republicans have once again chosen a candidate that some find downright dangerous? Much like George Bush, Donald Trump is regularly compared to Adolf Hitler. Trump’s policies threaten the issues that George Soros feels strongest about such as criminal justice reform, religious tolerance, and immigration reform. Mr. Soros has also accused Trump of “doing the work of ISIS” because he is eliciting fear amongst the general public.
Regardless of why George Soros has suddenly re-involved himself in the political world, his contributions have influenced others to do the same. By donating to Clinton’s campaign and to several super PACs that support her cause, Soros has catalyzed an effort that has given the Clinton campaign a gigantic advantage over Trump’s campaign on Twitter. Most regular GOP donors refuse to contribute to Trump’s floundering campaign, making his chances of winning slim.
For a more in depth look at George Soros he has published a series of eloquently written essays on his Website.
